A small family winery established in 1937, West Brook Winery has been making wines for many years with great success. In 1986, emphasis was shifted to producing premium varietal wines from selected regions.
The name and label of West Brook are regionally derived - Westbrooke being a small area in West Auckland situated close to the Winery. A water-driven mill is the feature on all West Brook labels, and represents those originally found in the area on the nearby waterways.
West Brook pride themselves on their friendly family atmosphere, where visitors are always welcome to stroll amongst the vines and through the technology in the winery, experiencing some of the magic and mystique involved in winemaking. The family winemaker is often on hand to talk to.
West Brook's philosophy is to produce wines from premium regions of New Zealand. These wines consistently win their share of medals at wine competitions and albeit rewarding to receive, awards are not first priority - producing varietal table wines for customers personal enjoyment is more important than what the pundits think we ought to produce. With a current crush of around one hundred tonne and a planned maximum of two hundred, each individual wine is able to be treated with hand-crafted care.
Fruit is sourced from selected vineyards predominantly in Hawkes Bay, with some varieties from Gisborne and Marlborough regions. At the Winery, the six acre home vineyard hosts Cabernet Sauvignon, the ever-popular Merlot and a new planting of Chardonnay.
Extra special parcels of fruit are ear marked for the Blue Ridge label, which is reserved by the winemaker for specially selected wines which are recognised for their distinctly unique style.
A small select range of port and sherries are also available. Wines are available through selected wine outlets and restaurants, by mail order and from the winery at 34 Awaroa Road, Henderson.
Adjoining the winery a covered BBQ area overlooking the vineyard is available most days for private functions where up to 80 people can be catered for.
Why not visit the winery to see and taste for yourself the West Brook experience.
