Morton Estate Wines continues to enjoy success in New Zealand and on major international wine markets, being recognised for its consistent high quality.
The company's successes have come at the 2002 London International Wine and Spirits Competition with Gold Medals awarded to its Black Label Chardonnay and Black Label Merlot Cabernet. Also the 2000 and 2002 Coniglio were both Double Trophy Winners in the 2005 and 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards, for the best International Chardonnay over £10 and the best Regional Chardonnay over £10.
Morton Estate was also one of four New Zealand companies nominated for the Schenker New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year Trophy in which it won, this award recognises outstanding contributions to the wine industry and was presented in October 2002. Morton Estate was also the only local company nominated for the Robert Mondavi Winemaker of the Year Trophy.
The company's wines have regularly featured in wine competitions and in 1997 it received the ultimate accolade when its Black Label Chardonnay won the Trophy for "Best Chardonnay in the World." In 2003, our Stone Creek Sauvignon Blanc won "Best Sauvignon Blanc in the world" and in 2002 Morton Estate won Best New Zealand Wine Producer.
In 2005 and again in 2006 The Morton Estate Coniglio Chardonnay 2000 and 2002 won both the Regional and International trophies for the Best Chardonnay (over £10) and the Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
Morton Estate Wines' investment in prime vineyard locations, technology and management expertise, coupled with the finest traditions of quality winemaking has established the company as one of New Zealand's finest wineries.
Morton Estate operates vineyards in Hawkes Bay and Marlborough while its distinctive Cape Dutch-style winery is located at Katikati, just North of Tauranga and is popular for "cellar door" wine sales. Morton Estates head office and marketing operations are based in historic Morton House, Epsom, Auckland.
Sharon Goldsworthy, our winemaker based in our Riverview winery in the Hawkes Bay. Sharon studied Microbiology at Massey University and has a Masters degree from Lincoln University. She brings to the company extensive winemaking experience. This has included working in France making a range of red and white wine, in Tasmania making sparkling wine and aromatics, and in Oregon, making and learning about Pinot Noir. In New Zealand she has focussed on Pinot Noir and also the aromatic white varieties.
Katikati winemaker, Nic Millichip has a wealth of winemaking experience gained across New Zealand, Australia, France and the US. Nic is from a family with a background in the beverage industry and studied Food Science and Human Nutrition at Otago he soon found that his interest took to the winemaking side. He continued on to graduate from a leading Australian wine college, Roseworthy and gaining his Graduate Diploma in 1996.
Morton Estate has invested in prime vineyard locations and developed its own vineyard sites whose unique characteristics create wines of unrivalled style and elegance. From our flagship Riverview Vineyard to Stone Creek and Kuranui in Marlborough and the newly planted vineyards in Hawkes Bay, Morton Estate embraces the French concept of terroir selecting the vineyard sites to optimise the characteristics of individual grape varieties.

2004 Coniglio Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
A wine of exceptional style and elegance, hand crafted from the finest Chardonnay fruit grown in our unique Hawke's Bay vineyard at Riverview. Produced only in years when the fruit achieves absolute perfection, hand selection and whole bunch pressing have created a style that is seamless and the pinnacle of the winemaker's art.
Fermented and then matured on lees in new French oak barriques, the fruit and oak are fully integrated in a palate that is soft, yet full with great length of flavour. Partial malolactic fermentation has further contributed to the complexity, fullness and weight of the palate.
The Coniglio style is one that will age gracefully for many years to come.2000 Blanc de Blanc Methode Traditionnelle -- ***1/2 Winestate Magazine, 2008
Made entirely from the Chardonnay grape variety using Methode Traditionnelle, it has been matured on yeast lees for 5 years. The aroma displays layered fruits with notes of orange blossoms and grapefruit intertwined with yeast autolysis characters that contribute white chocolate and a subtle earthiness. The palate has intense fruit weight combined with a fine mousse, finishing with confident acidity.

2006 Black Label Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
The Black Label Chardonnay is our flagship wine rated a "super classic" by Michael Cooper, NZ Wine Critic. The rich colour of this wine indicates the intenseness of flavour lurking within. The complex nose is a combination of pistachios, manuka smokiness with a hint of sweet vanilla. These in combination with crisp citrus aroma of the chardonnay grape grown from our exclusive Riverview Vineyard located in the Hawkes Bay region. The length of flavour on the palate is exceptional and exhibits an exquisite sweetness that is surprisingly full and dry. The 2006 vintage imports solid acidity ensuring longevity and suggesting aging should be for at least 5 years. Ideally suited to richer, white meat winter cuisine.
2007 Black Label Marlborough Pinot Noir
Fruit of exceptional ripeness and flavour was harvested from our Stone Creek Vineyard producing a wonderful classic Marlborough Pinot Noir. Aromas of black cherries with underlying Black Doris plums and vanilla beans take a sensual journey along the nasal passage. A silky palate envelops the tongue like a satin sheet. Cherries predominate with subtle earthy forest floor, truffle and mushroom notes creating interest. A long smooth finish completes the experience, leaving the taster relaxed and content, yet craving more. A wine of passion for passionate people. Enjoy with roasted red meats. May be cellared for 4 6 years.

"The Regent of Morton" is a product of Morton Estate's focussed vineyard planting programme to match varieties with the appropriate terroir. Deep red in colour, this stunning wine delivers the aromas of chocolate and mocha that fill the nose with a variety of berries and currants intertwined. The flavours are full of berries, plum and subtle French oak, with the palate supplying fine grained tannins that give great length and structure.
A full bodied wine well suited to winter roasts and stews. Will cellar well under good conditions for the medium to long term.
2006 Late Harvest Semillon
The 2006 Late Harvest Semillon is part of our esteemed Black Label range of wines. Botrytis affected grapes have produced aromas of preserved lemons soaked in honey mead. The palate is assertive, where honey mingles with chunky marmalade flavours a distinctive character of wine formed from Botrytis affected fruit. It is rich and fresh with a lengthy acid finish the key to a great dessert wine. This wine will be a fantastic accompaniment to cheeses, desserts and good friends. May be cellared for the medium term in a cool, dark place.
2007 Three Vineyards Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
A muchloved favourite, this blend comes from our three Hawkes Bay vineyards, Tantallon, Riverview and Kinross. Each vineyard gives the wine unique characteristics and when blended the best of each vineyard is captured creating an unsurpassed consistency of style, mouth feel and finish.
This elegant wine with strong fruit character is light yellow in colour and offers citrus with nectarine and peach flavours. The fruity marmalade aroma combines with the flavours to make this wine a well rounded full bodied wine.
2006 Stone Creek Marlborough Pinot Noir
Ruby red in colour with a fragrant nose of strawberry, cherry and black olive. The palate shows nice delicate fruit with the strawberry and cherry coming to the fore with the black olive mingling subtly. Soft fine tannins with a hint of toasty oak characters round out the mouth feel. Light to medium bodied, this wine is best enjoyed with lighter dishes such as Italian or vegetarian meals. Under screw cap, this may be cellared for approximately five years from the bottling date to develop Pinot Noir's characteristic earthy attributes.
2006 Stone Creek Marlborough Riesling -- Silver - Royal Easter Show, 2007. Gold (Top 50) New World Wine Awards 2008
A superb growing season certainly favoured a more cellaring style of Riesling this vintage, with the fruit being picked at desired acidity levels. This wine portrays concentrated flinty limes, quince, green apples with mineral undertones.
It is medium weighted, long and layered showing all the hallmarks of a wine that can age extremely gracefully. Superb match to scallops and fresh fish dishes.
2007 Stone Creek Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
The 2007 Stone Creek fruit was of optimum quality. This has produced a wine that showcases the very best of what Marlborough has to offer. The wine is bursting with gooseberry, capsicum and subtle grassy aromas while the palate adds tropical fruit notes and red capsicum. A fine wine that exhibits great intensity, delicate structure and persistence of flavour. Best enjoyed with seafood and salads.

Morton Estate's best known chardonnay which has consistently received accolades both in New Zealand and overseas. Fermented and lees-aged in French oak barriques, the 2007 vintage is light straw in colour showing stone fruit and citrus with a creamy biscuit note.
The palate is well rounded with persistent flavours giving great structure and length. The stone and citrus fruits intermingle with background oak and biscuit, buttery characters to give intensity and fullness to the mouth feel.
Exquisite when matched with fish, pork or poultry.2008 White Label Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc
Fruit blended together from three of our unique vineyards in the Hawkes Bay has produced a wine of exquisite freshness, flavour and approachability. Passionfruit, gooseberry and red capsicum envelop the nose and awaken the taste buds with subtle lime peel aromas present. A good example of the extraordinary drinkability of Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Great as a summer aperitif or an accompaniment to seafood cuisine. Best consumed within 2 years of the bottling date.
2008 White Label Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
2008 in Marlborough was again a fantastic year for Sauvignon Blanc. This wine shows all the characters of a great Sauvignon Blanc with passionfruit, citrus, nettles, cut grass and hints of capsicum. These aromas line the path to a soft, well rounded palate with a luscious mouth feel and the fruit characters make themselves known throughout the whole length of the experience. Ideal wine that will impress at any dining occasion especially summertime meals.
2007 White Label Pinot Gris
Cool nights and warm days during the growing season have helped to enhance the varietal character resulting in a wine exhibiting delicate aromas of white pear, nectarine, quince and a hint of cut hay. A full flavoured palate primarily driven by the above fruit flavours with an unctuous mouth feel integrated with subtle oak not present aromatically but contributing to a silky mouth feel that carries the wine through to a long lingering finish. Perfect as a lunchtime drink or accompaniment to Asian cuisine. Cellar for medium term for increased complexity.
2007 White Label Hawkes Bay Viognier -- Gold (Top 50) - New World Wine Awards, 2008
Viognier is one of the classic white varieties of the Southern Rhone Valley in France. Revelling in slightly warmer conditions, it has found its Southern Hemisphere home in Hawkes Bay in our vineyard in the Bridge Pa triangle area.
Full varietal flavours are only achieved by holding the fruit on the vines for an extended period, as the aromatic qualities of this grape are the last elements to appear in the ripening process. The 2007 vintage provided exceptional ripening conditions with perfectly clean,
ripe fruit. The wine has a vibrant straw gold hue. The nose displays lovely fresh aromas of musk and sweet orange marmalade with just a hint of spiciness. On the palate, the classic varietal flavours of mandarin peel and citrus abound and are augmented by a full-bodied, mouth-filling texture of exceptional length.
2007 White Label Hawkes Bay Gewurztraminer
Light green in colour, this superb wine displays aromas of rose water and mandarin. These burst forth from a wine not shy to escape the confinements of the glass. The palate is rich with a silky mouth feel, dominated by honeyed mandarin flavours that continue strongly, leading to a spicy, lengthy finish.
The flavours of this wine are generous and will be sure to complement spicy Indian and Asian dishes.
2006 White Label Marlborough Riesling -- Gold - Air New Zealand Wine Awards, 2008
An aromatic wine displaying nuances of flinty limes and mandarins with underlying honey characters. A crisp and lively palate compliments the lingering lemon, green apple, mineral and rosewater flavoured finish. A fine example of what our Stone Creek vineyard can achieve. Enjoy now, but will also reward 2 3 years cellaring. A good accompaniment to fish and summer salads.
2006 White Label Hawkes Bay " The Mercure"
A superb artistic fusion of the Bordeaux varietals of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The Merlot dominates the blend with the other varieties providing complexities and structure to the lush plums and berry characters of the Merlot. Dark plums, cassis, mint, cigar box, sandalwood, cedar and freshly shaken white pepper create intrigue and induce conversation. The palate is enveloping with dark fruits predominating swirling harmoniously with a backbone of cedar and mint. Fine tannins complete the package providing a lengthy finish. Perfect for a whole range of situations from BBQ drinks through to formal degustation dinner evenings. An exquisite match to full red meat dishes. Cellar under good conditions for up to 6 years from the bottling date.
2007 White Label Hawkes Bay Pinot Noir
2007 was a very hot and dry summer in Hawkes Bay producing above average brix levels. Fortunately for us, our inland, elevated vineyard sites still retain cool nights essential to Pinot Noir fruit character development. Lifted aromas of mocha chocolate, boysenberry and raspberry complement an intense black doris plum character while underlying hints of maraschino cherries are evident. The palate is silky and medium bodied with a lengthy fine-grained tannin finish. A wonderful accompaniment to wild game dishes. May be cellared for the medium term to allow for more earthy characters to develop.
2006 White Label Marlborough Pinot Noir
The 2006 Marlborough Pinot Noir exhibits fruits of cherries, raspberries, strawberries and plums typical of this variety. These concentrated fruits are enhanced by the older French oak giving undertones of mocha, cinnamon and chocolate.
The palate is smooth with a layered savoury structure and underlying herbal notes, finishing with elegant grainy tannins. This wine exhibits the quality that can be achieved from the Marlborough region.
Under screw cap, it can be cellared confidently for the medium term.
2005 White Label Hawkes Bay Merlot
Plums and blackcurrant fill the nose, with hints of cigar box and vanilla also evident. Dark plums and blackcurrants again dominate the palate, inter-mingled with dark chocolate and some subtle cedar characters.
The experience is extended with a long vanillin-oak, soft tannin finish. Superb with rich red meat dishes.
Deep red with brick red hue. Cassis, violet, with cedar notes fill the nose. Cassis and berry fruit with a nice hint of vanilla french oak are carried on a well-rounded pallet. The palette shows soft tannins that give nice length to the wine.Non Vintage Mill Road Chardonnay
A lovely fresh blend from our Hawkes Bay vineyards has produced a wine of exquisite flavour and drinkability. Light yellow in colour. A fruit driven wine of stone and tropical fruit with subtle lees and oak in the background. A full palate with the stone and tropical fruit leading the wine front start to finish. The lees and oak give a nice mouth feel to the wine and provide length. Suitable for lunchtime hospitality and lighter less rich cuisine. Cellar for 1 2 years for increased complexity.
Non Vintage Mill Road Merlot Cabernet Franc
This brick red in colour wine is made from a blend of the classic Bordeaux varieties. The nose shows berry fruits and bracken with subtle oak in the background. The fruit and a hint of toast carry into the palate with soft tannins. The combined result is a full-flavoured yet very friendly wine to drink on its own or with red meats of beef and lamb.
2006 Mill Road Pinot Noir -- Bronze - Air New Zealand Wine Awards, 2008
Medium red in colour, the Mill Road Pinot Noir is an elegant, soft wine blended from Hawkes Bay fruit. It displays a fragrant nose of strawberry, cherry and black olive. The palate exhibits nice delicate fruit with the strawberry and cherry coming to the fore while the black olive is evident in the underlying background. Soft, subtle tannins with a hint of toasty oak round out the mouth feel.
Light to medium bodied so best enjoyed with meals such as pasta or vegetarian so as not to overpower the wine. While ready to drink now it may be cellared for the short term.
2006 White Label Private Reserve Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
Aromas of bees honey, pear, nectarine and mango swirl from the glass. An elegant wine, the pallet exhibits prominent stone-fruit flavours fused with toasty, nutty characters obtained from extended aging on yeast lees. Well structured with a long and satisfying finish, it is a wine for the serious chardonnay drinker.
It is drinking well now or can be cellared for two to three years from the bottling date.2007 Private Reserve Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris -- Silver - New Zealand International Wine Show, 2008
Light green in colour, the nose exhibits perfumed peach blossom and nashi pear. Full flavours of ripe citrus fused with numerous floral characters, with an almost undetectable oak background combine to give a great mouth feel over the entire lengthy experience. Perfect for summer with great friends, seafood and green salads.
2007 Private Reserve Hawkes Bay Viognier
Trophy/Gold Mercedes Benz Hawkes Bay Wine Awards, 2007, Gold NZ International Wine Show, 2007, Gold Royal Easter Show, 2008Aromatic with orange blossom and mandarin characters, this medium bodied wine with intense flavours is an excellent example of Viognier, the new kid on the block. With aromas of ripe apricots and orange blossoms the White Label Reserve Viognier 07 is dry in style, sharing some Chardonnay traits such as distinctive fruit flavours and a creamy mouth feel.
Ideal with Asian stir fries, Thai food and curries it would also be an excellent accompaniment to dishes with more subtle flavours like fish.
