Riverside Wines is an established producer of high quality Hawke’s Bay wines for the domestic and international market. Their winemaking and viticultural assets are situated in Dartmoor Valley in the heart of Hawke's Bay, the oldest wine region in New Zealand.
They are committed to producing premium wines and believe they can achieve their goals of individuality, complexity, quality and consistency by utilising fruit from their own vineyards which surround the winery.
The picturesque winery is set amongst attractive tree plantings and landscaped grounds – a popular destination for both local and international visitors. Spectacular views of the Dartmoor Valley and beyond provide a unique setting to enjoy their wine and enjoy the scenery. The cellar door are open 27 December – 28 February (excluding 1 January), 7 days, 11am-5pm.
Ian and Rachel are family people and run their business based on simple principles, working together, building relationships and getting the fundamentals of business right by listening, planning and building trust. Having their own sales team, they are able to have a closer interaction with their customers and that helps to ensure a long and profitable relationship. They also support the community around them, assisting various organisations with sponsorship, and fundraising through events held at the winery and other voluntary work.
At Riverside Wines everyone are committed to producing and delivering wines we are proud of. Our aim is to make wine that people will enjoy and recommend to their friends, hence ‘Riverside, the wine friends recommend to friends’.

all the activities needed to produce a bottle of wine

Mark graduated from Lincoln University with a Post Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology in 1995 and he continued to work for Villa Maria until taking up the Assistant Winemaker position at Vidal Estate from 1999 through 2002. In 1998 and 2002 he worked vintages at Hugel and Fils, Alsace and at M.Chapoutier, Tain, France respectively.
As part of their commitment to produce quality wine Ian’s family farm, Rosemount, was topographically and geologically assessed and from this analysis the best grape growing sites were found on the property.
The farmland in Dartmoor Valley consists of river flats from the nearby Tutaekuri River and Apley Stream with shingly tracts where water once flowed. These flats lead onto old river terraces and rolling hills. The mix of soil types has led to different and varied parcels of land; heavy and light river gravels on the flats, deep red metal soils on the terraces, and the upper terraces have a clay base with large river gravels underneath. As a result, grape varieties have been planted where they suit the particular soil type.
The planting program has seen several vineyards of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon established resulting in greater flexibility when it comes to blending the wines.
Riverside Wines carry out intensive viticultural practices resulting in well exposed, clean fruit that reaches optimum physiological ripeness before harvest. They monitor all aspects of the vine and its surrounding environment to ensure a greater understanding of the individual vineyard growing conditions. Chemical applications are kept to a minimum with primarily organic compounds being used. For disease and pest control they use the 3T's philosophy "Apply the right treatment, at the right time, using the right technique."
